PITTSFIELD— WordXWord will facilitate free Poetry Slam Workshop with slam poet and mentor, Grace Rossman on April 1.
The workshop is for youth ages 11 to 14 of all experience levels, and will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Family Resource Center in Pittsfield. Poetry Slam is built on the idea of poetry as oral art form; that everyone should have access to the creative experience; and that everyone’s opinion about what makes a “good” poem is equally valid. The “slam” part comes from the element of “competition.” While many academics frown on the idea of competition in the context of any art, participants know that the competition is just a way to keep things lively. As we say, the point is not the points, the point is the poetry. Poetry slam is enthusiastically embraced by youth and adults and is found around the world in classrooms, coffee shops, bars and even at regional and national festivals. Note: For this middle school workshop, we will spend time thinking and writing and performing our poems “slam-style,” but we will leave off the competition element.
The workshop will be followed by a short performance/opportunity to share our work, and pizza!
The Family Resource Center is located at 480 West St., in Pittsfield. Register Online [Free] at this link.
