Next Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 10 a.m., at the Mount’s Berkshire Family Focus sponsored free Books and Blooms program visitors are going to be treated to a reading from local children’s author Jana Laiz who will read from her newest titles: “Blanket of Stars” and “Faerie Time.” Books will be available for purchase at the event.
A word from Jana Laiz:
The first thing you need to know about me is, I’m a writer. I’m crazy about writing. I’ve been writing stories, poems, journals, essays and plays since I was a kid and I have no intention of stopping. I’m always thinking up stories and I love it! I hope my stories are inspiring and that they help to make a positive difference in the world because I think that’s really important.
I am the first and current Writer-In-Residence at Herman Melville’s beloved Berkshire, Massachusetts home, Arrowhead. That means I have the amazing opportunity to write in Herman Melville’s study and look out at the view that inspired his great work, “Moby Dick.”
I am also a teacher. I have a Master’s degree in Education and I have taught almost every grade level from kindergarten to University. I’ve taught regular subjects and some unusual subjects, such as Mandarin Chinese and ESL.
Now, I’m focusing on combining my love of writing with my love of teaching.
Jana has written many children’s books and young adult novels including: “Simon Says,” “Weeping Under the Same Moon,” “The Twelfth Stone,” “Thomas and Autumn,” “Elephants of the Tsunami,” and “A Free Woman On God’s Earth”
“Blanket of Stars” is a lullaby book for little ones. Little Bird, Bunny and Fox all need to get ready for sleep. Lushly illustrated and comes with a CD by co-author Sean Vernon.
“Faerie Time” is Jana’s recently finished story about a mother and child building a faerie house in the woods. She will read it from her iPad and encourage children to help her illustrate this book during the craft time.
