The mere thought of how little I laughed each day sadden and frighten me. I realized how serious my life had become; how much I have lost the little child in me who, as far back as I can remember, used to find joy every day in everything. When was the last time I laughed uncontrollably — I can’t remember. Did I laugh yesterday, I can’t remember! What about the day before — nope? Sad, wouldn’t you agree?
Kelly A Turner, Ph.D. Documented the effects of laughter in a powerful book called “Radical Remission, The Nine Key Factors That Can Make a Real Difference: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds.” In Chapter 6, Saranne Rothberg swore she healed her of a stage 4 malignant breast tumor with laughter. (I encourage you to read the inspiring details of her story for yourself in this powerful book based on true stories of healing ). In addition to surgery and chemo her treatment included intentional fun and laughter twice a day, during which she threw herself a Chemo Comedy Party. That’s when she had an “AHA moment” and discovered her true calling — she founded The Comedy Cures Foundation — NYC based organization that has brought so much lightness to this dreadful disease. Her story is fascinating and truly inspiring.
There is lots of science and studies offering proof that laughter changes the chemistry in our bodies. However, we can probably all agree that when we lighten up we feel more positive and optimistic, more hopeful and engaged. We’re friendlier, more resourceful, more attractive, more radiantly alive!
What makes you laugh? What memories can you call up from your childhood that used to bring a smile to your face? How can you include some version of that in your life today? What do you find funny as an adult today? Who in your life is funny and inspires lightness? What can you do every day to inspire laughter and lightness in your world?
