GREAT BARRINGTON — There’s something about The Beatles that appeals to families, and on July 5 and 6, The Nutopians, are bringing the Beatles back to the Berkshires in a family-friendly concert titled “John Lennon Re-Imagined Beatles and Solo Years” to the Guthrie Center.

“The music of John Lennon is timeless and The Nutopians present it in a very exciting multi-generational performance,” said Tom Dean, one of The Nutopians’ co-founders. “Not only is the show musically entertaining, it also shares with the audience a great deal of insight into the exciting and creative musical decade of the 1960s.”

Playing with The Nutopians is Maggie Coffin, the multi-talented singer and 16-year-old daughter of Nutopians lead guitarist Robby Coffin. We caught up with Maggie via e-mail for a quick Q&A. See what she had to say about playing the Berkshires, the Beatles and the Guthrie Center. (For a glimpse of Maggie singing her rendition of “Revolution” mentioned below go online to

Berkshire Family Focus: Have you ever been to the Berkshires? And what are you most looking forward to about coming here for the July 5 and 6 concerts?

Maggie: Yes, I have been to the Berkshires. I like that it’s away from too much traffic and its quiet. It’s also very beautiful.

BFF: Your rendition of “Revolution” gave me chills and gives the song such a contemporary, soulful kind of vibe. How did a 16-year-old get into singing the Beatles?

Maggie: I’ve heard the Beatles around the house since I was little and I really got into them when I got older. I started learning more about them and just decided to share my liking for them through gigs and such.

BFF: We recently covered a story about the band Bubble who played another Beatles family concert at MASS MoCA recently. Why do you think Beatles music appeals to families and kids?

Maggie: Beatles music is fun and happy and interesting. Most of all, it’s different. All of the music on the radio today has the same sound and rhythm, but the Beatles music is bizarre and wonderful and interesting all at the same time. It keeps your attention; that’s why it attracts families and kids.

BFF: O.K. I have to ask, you have been singing with The Nutopians since you were 14, what is the coolest venue you’ve ever played and why?

Maggie: The coolest venue would have to be the Katherine Hepburn Center in Connecticut. It was spacious, the people were lovely and it had great air conditioning.

BFF: Any thoughts on coming to play the legendary Guthrie Center?

Maggie: The Guthrie Center is always a favorite for us; it’s a great place to come back to. One of my favorite parts is the food — it’s delicious!

The Nutopians is an eight piece ensemble, created and led by revered folk/rock artists Rex Fowler of Aztec Two-Step and Dean of Devonsquare. They will play their John Lennon Re-Imagined Beatles and Solo Years CD Release Concert Friday, July 5, and Saturday, July 6, at 8 p.m. (doors will open at 6) at the Guthrie Center, 2 Van Deusenville Road, Great Barrington.
