On Friday, June 24, Central Berkshire Coordinated Family and Community Engagement hosted “Literacy on the Lawn”at Kittredge Elementary School. Each child was greeted with a gift bag weighed down with books for summer reading and information on health and educational programs to be held throughout the summer in the Berkshires, such as the Dalton Free Public Library Story Hours (Thursdays in July and August, 10:00 – 11:00) and Summer Reading Program (beginning June 27), local STEAM/STEM programs, Play and Learn Playgroup at Kittredge School (Wednesdays in July from 9:30 – 11:00 and Monday, Weds and Friday in August from 10:30 – 11:30), the “Letter People” program for 4-year-olds entering kindergarten (Monday, Weds, Fri. in August, 9:30 – 10:30), Science Night at the Berkshire Museum (July 8, 5:30 – 7:30) and Family Fun & Fitness Day at Pittsfield Common (August 5, 10:00 – 1:00).
Kids were treated to popcorn, a “Digger, Dozer, Dumper” story walk, cozy picnic blankets (handmade by Terri Drain) equipped with mini reading libraries, a bubble laboratory, free identity kits and hearing and eye exams, not to mention close encounters with a fleet of emergency response vehicles, as well as a giant tortoise, American alligator and a variety of reptiles. There were also hair-raising off-road rides offered to families up and down the mountain and a petting zoo, featuring chicks, bunnies, a pony, donkey, alpaca and some amazing jumping baby goats.
