PITTSFIELD — The 2014 Berkshire Fringe Festival kicked off this year’s festival with an opening celebration Saturday, Aug. 2, and will host a variety of family-friendly events and concerts for the next two weeks, Aug. 5-18.

Some of the recommended events for families include:

Aug. 5, 6, 9, 11, 13, 16: RIOT: An epic tale of Greed, Violence and Cheap Sofas

In February of 2005 at the stroke of midnight, the British public punch, kick, strangle and eventually stab their way to £45 sofas and £35 bed frames at the opening of their favorite Swedish furniture store. An epic tale of violence, greed and cheap sofas, RIOT uses eyewitness accounts, newspaper articles and original music to expose the frenzied nature of consumer culture. A true story set in a lamp-lit flat-pack universe, RIOT is bursting with violence, romance, chaos and more characters than you can throw a meatball at. The premiere of this wildly hilarious, irreverent and poignant reimagining of Victor Hugo’s classic tale. $18 (advanced); $20 at door. Pick-Your-Own-Price Night is Tuesday, Aug. 5, and is only available cash at the door starting one hour before the performance. Aug. 6 & 8: SOLO: A two-person show

This is a special encore performance from Berkshire Fringe 2006 from Under the Table Theater. Fantasy, realty and memory collide as Under the Table’s Matt Chapman and Josh Matthews deliver a kaleidoscope of eccentric characters in this poignant physical comedy about two brothers struggling to say goodbye. Using hilarious mime, outrageous sound effects, acrobatics and a little devil puppet, SOLO, a two-person show travels through steamy jungles, into the netherworld and up a perilous mountain. Sunday, Aug. 10, 1 p.m.: The Wardrobe Ensemble (RIOT) will be teaching a free workshop open to ages 16 & up.

Aug. 11; 13-18: The Pi Clowns in “Clownolio!”

Andrew P. Quick, Leah Gardner and Cirque De Soleil clown extraordinaire Kelsey Custard of the award-winning physical comedy troupe Pi, return to the Berkshires to deliver a delightful brand of mischief and mayhem in their brand new production, Clownolio. Using elements of vaudeville, improvisation, acrobatics, juggling, eccentric dance and live music, this unstoppable trio will captivate audiences of all ages. $18 (advanced); $20 at door. Pick-Your-Own-Price Night is Monday, Aug. 11, and is only available cash at the door starting one hour before the performance.
