Hancock Shaker Village has plenty of summer fun activities for family members of all ages

Besides the highly attended spring Baby Animals exhibit, Hancock Shaker Village has plenty to delight and entertain families during its 2013 season.

PITTSFIELD — The Berkshires has come a long way weather-wise since I attended a spring press luncheon at Hancock Shaker Village where it looked (and felt) as if snowflakes would appear out of the sky at any minute, and the Baby Animals at the Farm needed their winter coats to keep warm. But summer has FINALLY arrived in Berkshire County, and as the weather heats up, so too do the family-friendly activities at Hancock Shaker Village.

“It’s a season of old favorites and new explorations,” said the village’s Director of Operations and Marketing Laura Wolf.

From yearly favorites such as the Age of Iron Weekend (Aug. 3 and 4) and the HSV Country Fair (Sept. 28 and 29) to behind-the-scene farm tours and beekeeping demonstrations, there are never a lack of family activities at the village. In fact, the village will even customize experiences to suit your family’s needs via a Choose Your Own Shaker Adventure option if the Day in the Life of a Shaker Child, Calf Stroll, Song and Dance or any of the other tours and adventure options aren’t to your liking.

“Let me know what you’re family is interested in and we will craft a tour for you,” said Todd Burdick, HSV’s director of interpretation and public programs, way back at that spring conference. “Families, individuals, groups — lots of people sign up for these. The most popular tour is where visitors can make a Shaker recipe in the kitchen.”

The village also has a series of art exhibits that will be rotating through the Poultry House Gallery throughout the summer months, currently on view is “Scott Taylor and Friends” through Aug. 25, and “Fakes and Forgeries: Shaker Chairs and their Influence,” both of which may appeal to families with children, especially the vibrant colors of a Scott Taylor painting.

But that’s not all. I’m excited to announce that the village will be sponsoring at least one more Berkshire Family Focus Days discount option (the first of which occurred during Baby Animals at the Farm) this summer where families can print out a special Berkshire Family Focus coupon here or by clicking on the ad to the right to use July 4-7. Look for more of these Berkshire Family Focus Days at Hancock Shaker Village and other Berkshire County venues in the future.

So enjoy the village! It’s an incredible place to take the kids this summer to learn, to grow and to just have a little family fun.

Hancock Shaker Village is located at 1843 West Housatonic St., in Pittsfield. For more information about any of the programs mentioned above go online to hancockshakervillage.org.
